Lindstrand Operations Lights Up Nigerian Night Sky with New 120 Airship

8th January 2010

Lindstrand Hot Air Balloons has redesigned its existing HS110 Hot Air Airship to increase the lift volume to 120,000 cu ft for Nigeria's Bayside Band, to support its performance at Carnival Calabar, in Cross River Stage, Nigeria, which took place on the 27th December.

The Bayside Band has over 3000 performing members and is headed by Donal Duke, the ex-governor of Cross River State, Nigeria. The Bayside Airship was flown above the band as it performed at the Carnival.

Mr Duke commissioned Lindstrand Balloons to build the airship at the beginning of 2009, and to ensure that it was capable of operating in the hot and humid climate expected at the event Lindstrand’s design engineers redesigned the envelope to increase the lift volume 10,000 cu ft, to create a new HS120 airship model. In addition the airship has also benefited from a number of other design modifications, including a more aerodynamic structure, a smoother surface to help improve the overall impression of the artwork and maximise the clients brand impact; and also incorporates internal halogen envelope illumination lamps for lighting up the airship and its artwork during night operations, making this the only night rated hot air airship currently operating in the world.

When it came to the logistics of operating the airship at the event, Lindstrand offered a full turn key package via its in house Operations department. This involved arranging air transport of the new airship, including a custom designed twin axle trailer, from the UK to Nigeria, working closely with Virgin Nigeria who helped Lindstrand with the liaison needed with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and organisation of the ground based logistic support, and culminated with our Pilot and Crew heading out to Nigeria to conduct the airship operations in support of the Bayside band’s carnival performance.

2009 proved to be a very successful year for Lindstrand Hot Air Airships and this is the third airship project which Lindstrand have completed during the year. We started the year with an all white HS110 Lindstrand Airship, built for Tom Manus Outdoor, a Malaysian advertising company who specialise in outdoor advertising strategies, being piloted by Chris Sanger-Davies for its initial test flights, flying above the world famous Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. This project was quickly followed by an approach from the BBC TopGear programme to build a bespoke flying caravan for a feature starring James May, with the episode eventually airing in November. For all of these projects Lindstrand has been the chosen partner due to our ability to provide custom lighter than air aircraft design, production of the aircraft, type approval and certification through to operating the aircraft anywhere in the world; proving what a truly unique service offering the company has to offer its clients .
